When an organism’s body is invaded by pathogenic viruses, infectious virus particles (virions) attach to and enter susceptible cells leading to the occurrence of viral disease. In some cases, viral diseases can lead to serious, perhaps life-threatening compilations, such as dehydration, bacterial pneumonia, and other secondary bacterial infections. Additionally, certain types of sexually transmitted viral infections, such as HIV/AIDS and HPV, can lead to serious complications and death.
