Lower Respiratory Infections encompass a range of illnesses affecting the airways and lungs, commonly caused by viruses, bacteria, or fungi. Viral Infections, such as influenza viruses and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), often present with symptoms like cough, fever, and shortness of breath. Bacterial Lower Respiratory Infections may include pneumonia, often caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, or Mycoplasma pneumoniae. The clinical presentation of Lower Respiratory Infections varies but may include productive cough, chest pain, fatigue, and, in severe cases, respiratory distress. These infections can affect individuals of all ages, with the elderly, young children, and immunocompromised individuals being particularly vulnerable. Diagnosis involves clinical evaluation, chest X-rays, and laboratory tests such as sputum culture and blood tests. Viral Infections may be identified through molecular techniques like polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Differential diagnosis is crucial to determine the appropriate treatment, as viral and Bacterial Infections require distinct therapeutic approaches. Treatment of Lower Respiratory Infections depends on the underlying cause. Antibiotics are prescribed for Bacterial Infections, while antiviral medications may be effective against certain viral pathogens. Supportive care, including rest, hydration, and antipyretics, helps alleviate symptoms and promote recovery.
