Antiviral agents constitute a diverse array of pharmaceutical weapons meticulously designed to combat viral infections with precision. Nucleoside analogs, like remdesivir, interrupt viral RNA synthesis, demonstrating efficacy against a spectrum of RNA viruses, including SARS-CoV-2. Protease inhibitors, such as darunavir, target viral enzymes critical for protein maturation, offering a potent defense against retroviruses like HIV. Entry inhibitors, represented by enfuvirtide, thwart the initial stages of viral infection by preventing the virus from entering host cells. Immunomodulators, like interferons, enhance the host's immune response, contributing to the identification and elimination of virus-infected cells. Advancements in CRISPR-based technologies and RNAi show promise in selectively targeting viral genetic material, presenting innovative solutions against viral infections. The quest for broad-spectrum antivirals and strategies to combat resistance remains paramount, emphasizing the need for ongoing research to stay ahead in the battle against viral adversaries.
