Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) stands as a late-stage manifestation of HIV infection, marking a profound impairment of the immune system. As HIV replicates and damages CD4 T cells, the body's ability to mount an effective immune response diminishes, leading to susceptibility to opportunistic infections and other complications. The diagnosis of AIDS is based on specific criteria, including a CD4 count below a certain threshold or the occurrence of AIDS-defining illnesses. AIDS-defining illnesses encompass a broad spectrum of infections and cancers, reflecting the immune system's profound compromise. These conditions range from bacterial infections like Mycobacterium avium complex to viral infections like cytomegalovirus, and neoplasms such as non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The development of AIDS highlights the advanced progression of HIV infection, requiring prompt and comprehensive medical intervention. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has revolutionized the management of HIV/AIDS, transforming it from a once-debilitating condition to a chronic, manageable illness. ART not only suppresses viral replication but also helps restore immune function, reducing the risk of AIDS-related complications. However, challenges persist, including access to treatment, adherence to therapy, and addressing the socio-economic factors influencing the HIV epidemic. A holistic approach involving medical, social, and public health strategies is essential in the ongoing global battle against AIDS.
