Abstract:

Antimicrobial stewardship is one of the most challenging issues in the 21st century. The author aims to present a personal experience from one of the best funded pediatric hospitals in the middle east. Outlining strategies used including communication with physicians and hard stop policies, outcomes, published research on the topic from Sidra, and a personal outlook on the future of antimicrobial stewardship.

Having relocated to Syria, The author will also try to contrast the situation between one of the richest countries in the middle east to a country fresh out of a civil war and explain challenges to antimicrobial stewardship implementation in Syria.

Biography:

Omar imam has trained as a pediatric infectious disease specialist in Qatar and worked as a physician in Qatar for 10 years. He has published research in the area of antimicrobial stewardship, case reports into unusual infections. He is a member of the international society of travel health and is interested in the use of affordable molecular diagnostics in pediatric infectious diseases. He currently works as a volunteer in the ministry of public health in Syria as part of the outbreak response team.
